The 82nd Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting was held in the AKS Culture Center conference room on September 14, 2020. Professor John DiMoia (Seoul National University) presented a lecture titled "Starting from Mosquitoes: South Korean Public Health and Approaching Crisis, 1959-1973." Due to the spread of COVID-19, the lecture was given without an audience and interviews with the speaker were produced separately.

Dr. DiMoia received a PhD in History from Princeton University in 2007 and is currently doing research on Korean modern and contemporary history as an assistant professor in the Department of Korean History at Seoul National University. His lecture focused on the development of Korea's public health system. After explaining the public health system's beginnings and historical backgrounds and presenting public health policies in Korea and medical aid programs in developing countries, he predicted trends and patterns in the current public health system in today's Korea.

The Korean government's response to the COVID-19 outbreak has been regarded globally as an example. This advanced public health system can be seen as a result of the government's successes and errors in handling previous disease outbreaks like SARS and MERS. This made the lecture based on the history and progress of Korea's public health system even more meaningful.
