The 162nd Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad was held in the B1 Conference Room of AKS’s Culture Center at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 1, 2019. At this colloquium, recipients of the 2019 AKS Fellowship presented research they had done while in Korea. Maya Stiller (assistant professor, University of Kansas, US) presented “Virtual Travel to Kŭmgangsan in Late Chosŏn Korea,” Sini-Petriina Kuusisto (PhD from University of Sheffield, UK) presented “HIV/AIDS Anti-Stigma Activism in Seoul,” Maria Kobzeva (PhD from University of Wisconsin, US) presented “Understanding your Neighbor: Writing Korea in the Chinese Standard Histories 정사(正史). Analysis of the Accounts of Eastern Yi 동이열전(東夷列傳),” and Mirkomil Sadikov (senior researcher, Academy of Sciences, Uzbekistan) presented “Kim Young Sam “segyehwa” policy’s impact for the Uzbek economic globalization: The case of Uz-Daewoo auto industry.”

Professor Stiller’s “Virtual Travel to Kŭmgangsan in Late Chosŏn Korea” told of the influence Geumgang Mountain had for elites in the late Joseon period. She explained and discussed the fact that people are still attracted to Geumgang Mountain by using various materials such as songs, maps, and travel records.

Dr. Kuusisto discussed research she carried out with an organization called Youth PL Community R. Along with Community R’s Seong-uk So, she suggested ways to eliminate the stigma and hatred towards HIV/AIDS in Korea.

Dr. Kobzeva examined and discussed the god-focused viewpoint in 4th century historical records in her presentation: “Understanding your Neighbor: Writing Korea in the Chinese Standard Histories 정사(正史).”

Dr. Sadikov analyzed the case study of Uz-Daewoo auto industry to discuss the influence Kim Young Sam’s government’s “segyehwa” policies had on the economic development and globalization of Uzbekistan.

Following the 27th AKS Summer Program for International Students in July, the Center for International Affairs’ Promotion of Korean Studies Abroad team at AKS hosted the 28th AKS Summer Program for International Students over three weeks from August 5 (Monday) through August 23 (Friday), 2019. This summer program brought international undergraduate students (sophomores and above) who are majoring in Korea related topics to Korea to experience Korea’s history and culture. This helps deepen their understanding of Korea and opens their eyes to possibilities as the next generation of Korean studies scholars. 25 students from 25 different countries around the world participated in this program.

The program included Korean language classes structured to accommodate the students’ proficiency levels and special lectures and site visits on Korea’s history, culture, and art. The group was able to see for themselves the different aspects of Korea from traditional times to the present through visits to Duksugung Palace, the Seokjojeon Daehan Empire History Museum, Jeong-dong modern heritage site, the National Museum of Korea, the National Hangeul Museum, the Gyeongju historic and cultural areas, and Panmunjeom and the DMZ. The participants participated in many events which included making Korean food, watching Korean movies, and seeing a musical. In addition, the participants were able to meet Korean university students and local residents through a program held in conjunction with the Seongnam City Bundang Pan-gyo Youth Training Center.

Having raised their own level of awareness and knowledge about Korea during this program, these students will play a pivotal role in spreading knowledge of Korea in their home countries.
