The 86th, 87th, and 88th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting

The 86th, 87th, and 88th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting were held on August 3, 12, and 19, 2021 at the Academy of Korean Studies. The lecture was conducted via Zoom to follow the social distancing rules for preventing the spread of COVID-19.
The 86th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting
At the 86th Sochietas Koreana Lecture, Professor Kim Cheong-gang of Hanyang University spoke about the history and future of Korean films under the title of "Korean Cinema Now and Then."

Nowadays Korean films are drawing global attention and it can be said that the success of Korean films in the global market and international film festivals is closely related to the success of Korean pop culture – the K-pop culture. But in the lecture, Professor Kim, who studied Korean film history, separated Korean films from the K-pop trend and expounded the long history of Korean films that had been overlooked in the world film history. He particularly mentioned Korean "art films" of the past and their struggles to survive in national and transnational contexts, and dealt with the relevance between films of the past and recent times. Lastly, he touched on a few things about the future of Korean films before wrapping up the lecture.
The 87th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting
At the 87th Sochietas Koreana Lecture, Professor Hong Seok-gyeong of Seoul National University gave the lecture on "Hallyu, a New Global Cultural Phenomenon for the 21st Century."

Professor Hong introduced the social and historical meaning of Hallyu and explained the development process of Hallyu in three stages. The first stage focused on Hallyu in East Asia, which was born of the huge popularity of Korean dramas in the region. It led to the emergence of Korean pop music as a global culture on the strength of the Internet and digital culture. The professor also mentioned the boy band BTS and the rebirth of Korean dramas through Netflix.

Professor Hong said that Hallyu could establish itself thanks to the global youth culture, as well as globalization, digital culture, and the convergence of culture in East Asia. Its value was recognized for increasing the consumption of media culture. Saying that this indicates that Korean pop culture is accepted and appreciated as a global pop culture, Professor Hong emphasized the need for more value-oriented policies to strengthen Korea's soft power.
The 88th Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting
At the 88th Sochietas Koreana Lecture, Professor Kim Bu-yeol of Seoul National University, speaking on the theme "Impacts of A.I.-backed Adaptive Learning on Students' Math Performance: Evidence from Vietnam," introduced a Vietnamese case in which A.I.-based tailored learning had an impact on students' achievement in mathematics.

Professor Kim, who studied development economy and sustainable development and conducted various field projects, introduced the 2019 HTHT (High Touch High Tech) prototype project which was supported by the Vietnamese Department of Education and Training and funded by the British Department for International Development (DFID). The project aimed to meet a certain level of education in terms of both quantity and quality in line with the importance of education which was included in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) enabled.

Professor Kim said that the experiment proved a statistically significant and economically significant impact on students' math learning. The project proved that the interactive elements (High Touch) of teachers' guidance linked to the adaptive technology (High Tech) that supports personalized learning considerably improved students' achievement. The professor concluded that a large-scale study of the HTHT approach should be conducted to verify the initial results of the study and solidify the evidence.

Diplomats from foreign embassies and officials from the diplomatic missions in Korea who attended the lecture had a meaningful time by sharing various opinions through the Q&A session held after the lecture. The lecture will be put on Societas Koreana's YouTube channel.
