The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) held a workshop with India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on the topic of Korean and Indian textbooks and educational cooperation. It was a two-day workshop from December 19 (Thursday) through December 20 (Friday), 2019, and was held at NCERT in New Delhi.

The workshop was held in accordance to an MOU signed by AKS and NCERT in June 2017 and was funded by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of India. The program was divided into four sections – developing curriculum and textbooks, ICT education, vocational education, and special education. Officials from AKS and other domestic educational institutions with contracts with AKS (Korea Education and Research Information Service, Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, and National Institute of Special Education) attended the workshop to help in successfully completing all for sections.

AKS participated in the “Developing Curriculum and Textbook” section, reported on implementation of content discussed in 2018, and discussed the timeline for future implementation. As part of this, practical discussions were held on the development of a joint Korea-India auxiliary textbook, translation and introduction of material showing each country’s identity, and mutual review of the contents of each country’s textbooks.

This workshop was an excellent opportunity for Korea and India to find ways to continue progressing in regards to textbook development and educational cooperation. In particular, India is in the midst of a full revision of their textbooks, so the workshop included many discussions on content that can be included in India’s textbooks to improve the image of Korea. Based on the outcome of this workshop, AKS will work closely with Korea’s Ministry of Education and the Korean embassy in India to expand the Korea-related content in Indian textbooks and to improve Korea’s image in India. We will continue to work for improved mutual understanding between Korea and India.

The Division for the Promotion of Korean Studies Abroad at AKS’s Center for International Affairs hosted the first “Hanmun (Classical Chinese) Fellowship” over 16 wees from September 2 (Monday) through December 30 (Friday), 2019. The AKS Hanmun (Classical Chinese) Fellowship was held for the first time this year in order to enhance the hanmun skills of the next generation of Korean studies scholars – university juniors and seniors and graduate students majoring in Korean. Even though this was the first fellowship, we received many applicants, showing how high the demand and interest in hanmun education is abroad.

Seven participants were selected from seven different countries around the world. Three courses were taught on Gyemongpyeon, Mencius, and The Heritage of the Three States (Samgungyusa), each taught by excellent instructors once a week for three hours on either Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. The participants all experienced hanmun education for the first time and showed great progress. The participants also had opportunities to learn about Korea’s political system, economy, society, culture and lifestyles as well as network with domestic and international students in Korea through visits to Korean studies graduate schools.

We plan on holding the second and third Hanmun Fellowships in 2020.
