The conference featured eight presenters including Marion Eggert (Ruhr University Bochum, Germany), Yannick Bruneton (University of Paris 7, France), and Hwang Hee-Young (University of Felix Houphouet Boigny). Each presenter discussed the current situation of Korean studies education and research in their region, shared problems, and sought for solutions. The participants lively discussed ways in which to take Korean studies education and research to the next level by expanding from language-related topics to deeper and more diversified subjects. Furthermore, they discussed directions in which Korean studies must progress for its globalization.

This conference was an opportunity to learn about the detailed status of Korean studies in each region. The contents and discussions of this conference contributed greatly to the direction and future strategy of promoting Korean studies. AKS’s Division of the Understanding Korea Project in the Center for International Affairs invited education experts from India’s National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) to hold a workshop on educational cooperation between the two countries from September 16 (Monday) through September 20 (Friday), 2019.

AKS and NCERT have held education cooperation workshops since signing an MOU in 2017. These workshops promote exchange and cooperation in the areas of “textbooks and curriculum,” “vocational education,” “special education,” “ICT education,” and “physical education.”

As part of the cooperative project on “textbooks and curriculum,” the two organizations plan to jointly publish a textbook on the topic of “Korean and Indian Democracy.” During this workshop, the education experts discussed how to organize the textbook so that students can easily understand the development of democracy in both countries.

The experts from NCERT visited Asansungsim School to inspect Korea’s special education system. At a meeting with the National Institute of Special Education, they reviewed the implementation of the collaborative projects and discussed future timelines. The also visited the Korea Education and Research Information Service to look at the current status of “digital textbooks” in Korea. They agreed to research collaborative projects that both organization could pursue in the field of “ICT education.”

This workshop helped further solidify the foundation of educational cooperation between both countries. We will continue to work on the production of the collaborative textbook and to discuss other forms of educational cooperation to provide an example of educational cooperation.
