AKS’s Center for International Affairs hosted the “Textbook Seminar for Educators of Paraguay” over seven days from May 26 (Sunday) through June 2 (Saturday), 2019. Representatives from Paraguay’s Ministry of Education and Culture, Catholic University of Asunción, and textbook publishers Alianza and Atlas attended the event.

First, at a textbook seminar which was part of the training, the participants from Paraguay met with the Korean presenters including those from the AKS Understanding Korea team. They had time to discuss the education and textbook systems of each country, Korea as seen in Paraguay’s textbooks, and other aspects of Korea which could be included in Paraguay’s textbooks. Following this, the guests from Paraguay heard lectures on Korean history, culture, and geography.

The group then traveled to historical sites in Gyeongju including Cheonmachong, Bulguksa, and Seokguram. They also visited Korea’s second largest city Busan to experience the flow of Korea’s modern history at the United Nationals Memorial Cemetery in Korea, the Busan Provisional Capital Memorial, and Gamcheon Culture Village. They also had the opportunity to expand their knowledge of Korean history and culture by viewing “Shimcheong,” a performance of Korean traditional arts.

Participating in this textbook seminar strengthened the Paraguayan textbook experts’ understanding of and interest in Korea’s education system, history, economy, and culture. They agreed to cooperate in our efforts to promote mutual understanding between the two countries’ students through textbooks and Understanding Korea material.
