Visit to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan for Textbook Improvement Activities

The Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies held a textbook improvement activity of textbooks for Astana, Kazakhstan and Tashkent, Uzbekistan on July 1 ~ 9, 2018.

In Astana, Kazakhstan, the delegation had meetings with the persons concerned from the following organizations: Korean embassy in Kazakhstan; Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan; Korean Cultural Center in Kazakhstan; “Uchevnik,” the textbook center under the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan; and Association of Korean-Kazakhs in Astana. In the meeting with the Korean ambassador in Kazakhstan, the delegation learned about the recent growth factors in Kazakhstan, remarkable activities of Korean-Kazakhs in Kazakhstan, and interest of Kazakhstan in Korea and confirmed that the contents on Korea have been increasing recently in the textbooks of Kazakhstan with fewer errors in the information on Korea than before. The vice director of the Bureau of Education, who is in charge of early childhood, elementary, and secondary education in the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, explained about the educational system and textbook system in Kazakhstan and emphasized that they are particularly interested in the Korean system of early childhood education, expressing the hope of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Education and Science of applying the good educational system of Korea to the education in Kazakhstan. While visiting the Korean Cultural Center in Kazakhstan, the delegation saw how Korean language education is being done very actively. Many Kazakh students are applying for the language programs not only in regular semesters but also during vacation periods; thus inducing a high rate of competition for admission. The two institutions agreed to cooperate more closely for the improvement of Korea’s image in Kazakhstan.

n “Uchevnik,” the textbook center under Kazakhstan‘s Ministry of Education and Science, many people concerned from the textbook center of Kazakhstan participated in the large-scale meeting wherein participants discussed ways of improving the education system and textbooks of Kazakhstan and solidifying the educational cooperation system with Korea. In the meeting, the director of the textbook center of Kazakhstan raved about the superior educational system of Korea and requested the signing of an agreement on education and academic exchanges so as to promote a closer educational relationship with Korea. The delegation then expressed their appreciation for the hospitality and great interest in Korea and suggested reviewing and adjusting the contents of the agreement on education and academic exchanges after returning to Korea. Regarding the request of the textbook center to be invited to Korea, the delegation said that it will not be easy to invite them to Korea this year but will consider it positively next year after going over the budget and programs. Finally, in the meeting with personnel from the Association of Korean-Kazakhs in Kazakhstan, the delegation heard of the remarkable activities and present situation of the people of Korean heritage in Central Asia and promised to make utmost efforts to help the people of Korean heritage position themselves as social leaders in Central Asia.

Afterward, the delegation went to Tashkent, Uzbekistan with the following itinerary: interview with the Korean ambassador in Uzbekistan and meeting with the workers of the embassy; meeting with the president of Tashkent State Institute Oriental and signing of an MOU; meeting with the director of educational courses of the Ministry of National Education of Uzbekistan; interview with the director of Korea Education Center in Tashkent and meeting with its workers; seminar with the persons concerned in education in Uzbekistan; and interview and meeting with the vice president of Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizomiy. According to the Korean ambassador in Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan has the biggest number of Korean heritage people among Central Asian countries, and the country is in a time of various changes due to the replacement of its president. The delegation was also told that Uzbekistan is very interested in the educational system of Korea, and that various kinds of educational cooperation programs are underway for the direct learning of the Korean educational system. In addition, in the meeting with the workers of the embassy, the delegation checked what the Korean Culture Exchange Center can do for cooperation in each area, promised to provide materials and correct information of Korea, and agreed to make mutual efforts to enhance the image of Korea in Uzbekistan through closer communication. On the other hand, in the meeting with the president of Tashkent State Institute Oriental, an agreement on academic cooperation between the two institutions was signed for more active mutual exchange of educational and academic materials. In addition, Tashkent State Institute Oriental requested for a solid relationship with the Korean Culture Exchange Center for securing various human and material resources for the establishment of the School of Korean Studies scheduled to be opened next semester. The delegation promised to review the matter positively through internal discussions.

The seminar with education personnel in Uzbekistan was held at the Korea Education Center in Tashkent with the active cooperation of the Korea Education Center. The delegation expressed deep appreciation to the director of the Korea Education Center for the seminar and promised to cooperate closely for Korean language education in Tashkent. Meanwhile, the delegation learned about the change in education in Uzbekistan during the interview with the director of educational courses of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of National Education, which was held just before the beginning of the seminar. The delegation saw the need to provide more various kinds of information on the Korean education system and the possibility of adding contents related to Korea in the textbooks of Uzbekistan. In the following seminar with persons concerned in education and textbooks, the participants shared the educational systems of Korea and Uzbekistan and agreed that the two institutions should cooperate more closely for a correct description of Korea in the textbooks of Uzbekistan. In addition, most of the participants in the seminar requested materials and information related to Korea, and the delegation promised to prepare ways of offering correct materials and information related to Korea for the writers of textbooks. On the other hand, in the interview with the vice president of Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizomiy, the delegation checked the progress of the program selected in the program of the Korean Culture Exchange Center for the support of overseas private organizations as part of the Understanding Korea Project and asked for double assurance for the Understanding Korea Project in Uzbekistan, which was carrying out the program selected this year. Finally, the vice president of Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizomiy expressed appreciation for the selection of their program this year and promised to do their best to carry out the Understanding Korea Project well in Uzbekistan.

The 152nd Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad was held at the large meeting room on the first basement of Munhyeonggwan at the Academy of Korean Studies at 2 pm on July 4, 2018.

Jitendra Kumar Gupta gave a presentation on the subject “Aging in the South Korea: Socio-Demographic Feature of the Elderly and the Labour Market.” He analyzed the status of aging societies like South Korea from diverse perspectives and cited the current problem of the labor market being unable to cope with the rapid changes. Researchers and students graced the occasion with their presence.
