The 72nd Societas Koreana Lecture Meeting was held at the Press Club, Press Center at 5:30 pm on March 28, 2018.

About 60 foreign opinion leaders living in Korea (ambassadors in Korea, diplomatic officials, and researchers) attended the event to listen to the lecture by Professor Ross King (University of British Columbia) on the subject “How are North Korean Women Supposed to Speak? Linguistic Etiquette and Women’s Language in Official North Korean Planning Discourse.”

During the lecture, Professor Ross King explained the dialogue technique of North Korean women, virtues of women, and “ethics of communism.” In particular, he mentioned “outspoken factors” that have recently been found in the dialogue techniques of women in Pyongyang, explaining that the background of this issue includes the linguistic ideology of North Korea, issues of linguistic purism and gender politics, and increased influence of South Korean media. Furthermore, he gave an overview on the history of dialogue for the official linguistic policy of North Korea regarding courteous expression and connected this to the recent phenomenon on linguistic anxiety and siege found in North Korean journals on language. Through this lecture session, the participants had an opportunity to learn about linguistic courtesy and female language in North Korean language.
