International Conference on the English Translation of
Korean Classics

The International Conference on the English Translation of Korean Classics was held by the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies on December 8, 2017 at the auditorium seminar room of the Academy of Korean Studies.

Approximately ten translation experts including Miriam Löwensteinová (Czech, Charles University in Prague), Charles Muller (Japan, Tokyo University), and Ross King (Canada, University of British Columbia) gathered and discussed the meaning and external matters of Korean classics while seeking the translation method and future direction.

Especially, based on various opinions that they have acquired from their own experiences with the borderline between liberal translation and direct translation, scope of footnote, etc., they had time to discuss actively and debate on how to translate Korean classics accurately while delivering the beauty of Korean classics.

This academic conference demonstrated that Korean classics could be translated into languages of each country as well as English. It also contributed to the building of network among researchers with related majors worldwide. The Academy of Korean Studies will continue to make efforts so that Korean studies including the translation of Korean classics can improve quantitatively and qualitatively.

The 146th Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad was held at the room no. 220 on Munhyeonggwan at the Academy of Korean Studies at 3 pm on December 6, 2017.

Sunyoung Son, a fellow young scholar, gave a presentation on “Mobile Books, China, and Tradition in Yi Tŏngmu’s Noeroe nangnaksŏ in Eighteenth-Century Korea.”

Re-highlighting Lee Duk-moo and his historic book called “Noeroenangnaksseo,” which earned raves at the time, Suyoung Son explained why many parts of the book, which has not yet been researched extensively, were mistreated in the present days.

El Salvador Education Ministry Researcher's Visit

Juan Ramón Joya Reyes, the development officer for elementary education curriculum of El Salvador’s Ministry of Education, visited Korea between December 2 to 8, 2017 in a bid to act on the Public Diplomacy Ability Enhancement Project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Expansion of Korea's development model contents in foreign textbooks). He started his schedule with the Academy of Korean Studies on December 4th, 2017.

First, they watched a promotional video of the academy and received an introduction to the Understanding Korea Correctly campaign. It was followed by the Understanding Korea documents published by the Office of the Understanding Korea Correctly campaign as well as the representative achievements of Central and South American countries. Then, while visiting Jangseogak, they received a brief introduction on Jangseogak and watched a Jangseogak special exhibition called “Love and blind love of old generation.”

Despite the short schedule, Juan Ramón Joya Reyes said that his interest in the Understanding Korea project deepened, and that it was a chance to seek cooperative methods to introduce Korea-related contents in El Salvador textbooks. He added that the Understanding Korea documents published by the Office of the Understanding Korea Correctly campaign would help him learn about Korea and revise the textbooks accordingly. Finally, he vowed to make continuous efforts to introduce Korea in El Salvador textbooks.

Fellowship for Textbook Specialists of Nicaraguan

The “Fellowship for Textbook Specialists of Nicaraguan” was held from November 26 to December 1, 2017 at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies.

Claudia Maria Gonzalez from the ministry of education in Nicaragua (adviser for middle and high school social studies textbooks), Zela Yamileth Hueste (adviser for elementary school education social studies textbooks), Gerardo Manuel Garcia (elementary education department support manager for neglected classes), and Silvia Elena Toval (education course planning manager) participated in the seminar.

At the textbook seminar, participants had time to review the status of education and textbook policies of the two countries with Korean presenters such as researchers from Understanding Korea Correctly campaign of the same academy. They also sought future cooperation methods to revise Korean content in Nicaragua textbooks. Furthermore, they got to enhance their interest and understanding with regard to Korea through politics, economy, history, and culture lectures.

They explored UNESCO world cultural heritage such as POSCO, Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, and others. They also visited the National Palace Museum of Korea and Gyeongbokgung Palace and watched a Korean traditional culture performance. During their week-long stay, they explored the history, culture, and developed the aspect of Korea, learning overall information about Korea and discussing methods of connecting Nicaragua with Korea.

Through this visit, Nicaraguan textbook experts expressed immense interest in the Understanding Korea project and stated that they would cooperate so that Nicaraguan students develop much more interest in Korea and learn about Korea as well.
